A reference in the support of Research.
The BIAL Foundation was created in 1994 by Laboratórios BIAL in conjunction with the Council of Rectors of Portuguese Universities. BIAL’s Foundation mission is to foster the scientific study of the human being from both the physical and spiritual perspectives. It is managed by representatives from both institutions.
Along the years the BIAL Foundation has developed an important relationship with the scientific community, first in Portugal and after worldwide. Today it is an institution of reference which aims to stimulate new researches that may help people, promoting more health and contributing to new milestones to gain access to knowledge.
Among its activities the BIAL Foundation manages the BIAL Award, created in 1984, one of the most important awards in the Health field in Europe. The BIAL Award rewards both the basic and the clinical research distinguishing works of major impact in medical research.
The BIAL Foundation also supports scientific research projects for the neurophysiological and mental study of the human being, arousing the interest of researchers in the areas of Psychophysiology and Parapsychology.
To date the BIAL Foundation has supported 537 projects, about 1200 researchers, with research groups in twenty-five countries. The research funded by the BIAL Foundation in the areas of Psychophysiology and Parapsychology from 1994 to March 2016 resulted in the publication of a total 696 articles in indexed journals, 539 of which in journals with an average impact factor of 3.3. In March 2016 there was a substantial number of citations (7883), with 102 publications cited more than 20 times.
A study conducted by Marinho, Guedes and Sousa, presented at the 11th Symposium of the BIAL Foundation, held in Porto from March 30 to April 2, 2016, gives an overview of the changes in the number of publications from 1994 to March 2016 and can be accessed at the following link. In addition, the Foundation established a database Athena/Bial that can be accessed by the scientific community and by the general public at http://fbial.docbasecloud.net/.
In 1996 the BIAL Foundation has begun organizing the Symposia entitled "Behind and Beyond the Brain", a Forum that gathers well renowned neurosciences speakers and the researchers supported by the Foundation, who are spread around the world.
Classified as a non-profit institution of public utility, the BIAL Foundation includes among its patrons the Portuguese President, the Portuguese Universities Rectors' Council and the Portuguese Medical Association.
