Awards

The BIAL Award was created in 1984 with the aim of encouraging and promoting highly influential works in the area of medical research. The award has since been awarded biannually, enjoying the support and collaboration of the President of the Republic, the Council of Rectors of the Portuguese Universities and the Portuguese Medical Association.

Recognising and distinguishing basic and clinical research, the Prémio BIAL de Medicina Clínica, amounting to a total of EUR 100,000 nowadays, seeks to recognize a written work on any freely chosen medical topic of high intellectual quality and aimed at clinical practice. The proposals are submitted by the authors and at least one of them must be a native physician of a Portuguese speaking country.

Throughout its various editions, this prize has followed the evolution and trends within the field of medicine, having recognised several works in the fields of civilisation diseases, genetics, molecular medicine, imaging, substitutive and regenerative therapies, and many more.

Since its establishment, the BIAL Award has considered 655 entries from 1,591 researchers, doctors and scientists from 20 countries. In 17 editions, it has recognised 99 works by 266 authors, with more than 315,000 copies of 38 award-winning works having been published and distributed free of charge to health professionals.

The BIAL Award in Biomedicine was created in 2017 to extend the scope of the BIAL Foundation’s activity and to recognise the most notable and relevant discoveries in that field. This new award, which is worth three hundred thousand Euros, will be awarded for the first time in 2019 and aims to recognise a work of a biomedical nature with high quality and scientific relevance results published as of 1 January 2010. Only works nominated by the members of the Jury, some Board members of the Foundation and Scientific Societies may be considered candidates.

The BIAL Award in Biomedicine has the support of the President of the Portuguese Republic, the Council of Rectors of the Portuguese Universities and the European Medical Association.

The awarding of the Prémio BIAL de Medicina Clínica will alternate each year with the BIAL Award in Biomedicine, which maintains its objective of distinguishing an original work of a medical nature aimed at clinical practice and in which at least one of the authors must be a physician in a Portuguese-speaking country.
