With a total amount of 340 thousand Euros, the BIAL Award shares the basic and the clinical research by two prizes: the “BIAL Merit Award in Medical Sciences” and the “BIAL Award in Clinical Medicine”.
According to Luís Portela, president of the BIAL Foundation, "along the years it becomes more evident the growing interest in the BIAL Award among European and North American researchers, who appear in the competition together with well-known names in the Portuguese research field and with other professionals, not so well known but with a remarkable work". In this 15th edition of the BIAL Award, Luís Portela highlights that "the BIAL Foundation has as main objective to attract the best health professionals in Portugal and, ever more, the best health care professionals worldwide, continuing to reward and incentivize medical research".
The “BIAL Merit Award in Medical Sciences” is worth 200 thousand Euro and rewards works of high quality and scientific relevance. The “BIAL Award in Clinical Medicine” with the value of 100 thousand Euros is designed to distinguish a freely chosen topic in clinical practice. In this edition the screening committee may select up to four works with Honourable Mentions, worth 10 thousand Euros each.
In addition to the monetary value, the BIAL Award includes also the publication of an exclusive edition of ten thousand copies of the winning work of the “BIAL Award in Clinical Medicine”, along with some of the other awarded works, which will be distributed to health professionals, free of charge.
The screening committee of the BIAL Award 2012 consists of Professor António de Sousa Pereira, as chairman, and representatives of Portuguese Schools of Medicine, Professors Miguel Castelo-Branco (Faculty of Health Sciences - U. Beira Interior), Maria João Marques Gomes (Faculty of Medical Sciences - U. Nova de Lisboa), Adelino Leite Moreira (Faculty of Medicine - U. Porto), António Martins da Silva (Abel Salazar Institute of Biomedical Sciences, U. Porto), Luís Providência (Faculty of Medicine - U. Coimbra), Nuno Sousa (School of Health Sciences - U. Taking place every two years, the BIAL Award was established in 1984 to reward and publish works of major impact in medical research. Since its inception the BIAL Award has examined 518 works, has mobilized 1156 researchers, doctors and scientists, and has distinguished 227 authors (87 prize-winning works). Among the awarded works 32 were published and distributed free of charge to health professionals in a total amount of almost 300000 copies.
The BIAL Foundation is a non profit and public utility institution that was created in 1994 by Laboratórios BIAL in conjunction with the Council of Rectors of Portuguese Universities. BIAL’s Foundation mission is to foster the study of Man, and it plays an outstanding role in the enhancement of medical and scientific research at international level. Besides the BIAL Award the BIAL Foundation assigns Science Research Scholarships in the area of neuroscience and organizes the symposium entitled "Behind and beyond the Brain”, every two years.
